- Napoleon Bonaparte was a brilliant leader.
- He overthrew the directory and constructed a Constitution.

- Born on August 15, 1769 in Corsica to a modest family.
- As a kid, he was sent to military school by his father.
- After he graduated, Napoleon was comissioned a second lieutenant in La Fere artillery unit.
- Napoleon makes peace with the Roman Catholic Church after the religion is abolished earlier.
- Roman Catholic Church is the main religion during his reign.
- Napoleon institutes the Civil Code which gives both political and legal equality to all men based on merit.
- Napoleon also institutes restrictions on speech and press.

- Napoleon gives himself all of the power totally disregarding the other leaders.
- Napoleon makes him and his family into a dynasty.
- By the time he was done, Napoleon had captured all of the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Netherlands, Prussia, and Austria.
- Napoleon’s Army consisted of about 6,000 men.
Accomplishments
- Napoleon created the Napoleonic Code which gave equality to everyone regardless of their religion or wealth.
- In the Coup of 18 Bromaire, Napoleon's group was able to overthrow the French Directory.
- After the Coup of 18 Bromaire, the directory was replaced with a three person consulate in which Napoleon was the first consul.
- Napoleon was successful in centralizing the French government.
- Napoleon sold Louisiana territory to North America for $15 million.
- This was later called the Louisiana Purchase.
